A Letter from the Red Hook West Resident Association Executive Board
August 2025
Hello Red Hook West neighbors,
I hope this message finds you and your family in good health and high spirits.
As your Resident Association President, I want to share some important news. We’re about to kick off a community-led planning process to tackle the long-standing issues with our apartments, buildings, and campus. While recent FEMA upgrades have made us more resilient, they haven’t fixed the everyday challenges we face – like poor living conditions, long-overdue repairs, and a lack of supportive services. That’s not good enough. We all deserve better!
Over the next six to eight months, we’ll be hosting a series of meetings, both big and small, where you’ll have the chance to help shape a shared vision for the future of Red Hook West Houses. Our goal is to ensure everyone here has access to safe, dignified, affordable housing for generations to come and the kinds of services that help people grow and succeed.
We’ll talk about more than just buildings. Together, we’ll imagine better housing design, improved shared spaces, and new programs to help residents gain skills, build equity, and strengthen their community.
Now is the time to come together and create a clear, resident-driven plan for what Red Hook West should be for us, our families, and future generations. NYCHA is interested in helping us realize our vision through the PACT program, which can bring significant funding and other benefits to our community.
This process puts residents in the driver’s seat. Your voice is essential in helping to identify the problems, set priorities, and work on solutions together. To help guide the planning process, we’ve brought in BFJ Planning and Marvel, both independent professionals experienced in this kind of work.
We want everyone from youth to adults, and seniors to be part of this effort. Keep an eye out for upcoming events over the coming months, and please come share your ideas and hopes for our community. All opinions and perspectives are welcome!
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Karen Blondel and the Red Hook West Resident Association Executive Board
